Golf Guangzhou is excited about the recent news that the International Olympic Committee announced in October that golf shall be listed as an Olympic sport once again and feature in the 2016 Olympic Games. For the past couple months, a many number of golf in Guangzhou articles have appeared throughout the press concerning the emergence of golf in China and its sustainability. Golf Guangzhou was first introduced to Chinese mainland in 1916 but was fairly unknown until the appearance of an extremely wealthy class in the mid 1980s. The first golf course opened in 1984 in Guangzhou and since then, it has grown exponentially. Today, there are over 500 golf courses in China for supposedly 3 million players. But with the rapid increase in the number of Guanzhou golf courses, serious environmental issues have been raised. Nevertheless golf in Guangzhou looks bright for the future.
Zhu Dinghui, the executive director of the largest golf club in the world –the Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, predicts by "2020 China will rank second in the world in terms of Guangzhou golf population, with more than 20 million Gunagzhou golf lovers domestically. At present there are about 3 million people playing golf in China, and 300,000 of them live in Guangzhou. Thanks to Guangzhou's tropical climate, Guangzhou golfers can enjoy the sport in any season. Northern China, on the other hand, is not suited for this game. According to Dean Jerrett, the director of Guangzhou Best Chimelong International Golf Academy, who spent half a year both in Beijing and Shanghai, the environment is much tougher for golf to survive.
Some time ago, Guangzhou Golf was a game for the nobility but these days, it is for the rich with Guangzhougolf club memberships in the PRD ranging between 100,000 and 2 million RMB. Amongst the 500 golf courses in China, only 1.7% of them are open to non-members. For instant, although Guangzhou has 70 golf courses, only 3 are open to the public. But if you are part of the lucky few to walk the beautiful greens of Missions Hills or Dragon Lake golf club, then according to Dean Jerrett Guangzhou golf isn't just a sport, it's also a way of living with strict rules to follow to become part of the clan.
